I’ve gotta do it.’”

This is Trump recounting a conversation with his father, who was a major developer in Queens. I think it’s hugely revealing about how Trump sees himself. He always felt like he wasn’t in the real inner circles — that he was the kid with his face pressed against the glass on the outside. It’s why he hates “elites.” And I firmly believe it’s why he ran for president in 2016.

25. “And I have assets— big accounting firm, one of the most highly respected— 9 billion 240 million dollars.”

Not only was it weird for Trump talk about his specific net worth in his announcement speech but he was also wildly exaggerating. He’s never been worth $9 billion. In 2024, Forbes estimated his wealth at $6.1 billion.

26. “In fact, one of the big banks came to me and said, ‘Donald, you don’t have enough borrowings. Could we loan you $4 billion’? I said, ‘I don’t need it. I don’t want it. And I’ve been there. I don’t want it.’”

The chances this happened are roughly 0%.

27. “According to the economists— who I’m not big believers in, but, nevertheless, this is what they’re saying— that $24 trillion— we’re very close— that’s the point of no return. $24 trillion. We will be there soon. That’s when we become Greece. That’s when we become a country that’s unsalvageable. And we’re gonna be there very soon. We’re gonna be there very soon.”

The current national debt is $36 trillion. Trump added almost $8 trillion to the national debt during his first four years in office.

28. “I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively, I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall.”

What’s fascinating to me is that this is the first time in the speech — and we are very close to the end — that Trump mentions building a wall to deal with immigration. Building the wall obviously became the centerpiece of Trump’s 2016 campaign. But when he started, he had no idea how powerful it would be as an issue and a symbol. Which is why it’s down so low in the speech.

29. “And I promise I will never be in a bicycle race.
